Fermentation is usually associated with food. But the powerful combination of tiny microorganisms and time also works in entirely different areas—such as in the production of indigo, the rich blue hue we know from blue jeans, for example.
Anne-Marie Scheidegger foundedBotanitex, a micro-industrial textile dyeing business in Winterthur, in 2023. Her goal: to provide transparent, local dyeing services using natural dyes for brands and individuals.
In a short presentation, Scheidegger provides insight into the production and dyeing process using indigo—one of humanity’s oldest pigments, which was already being used to dye textiles in prehistoric times. Afterward, participants will try their hand at dyeing at the " Mühlerama ": Each participant will pull a small fabric swatch from the indigo vat, watch as it turns blue, and take it home as a souvenir—as long as the microorganisms cooperate.
There will be light refreshments served before the presentation.
